Slave tiles were reputedly made by slaves in Georgia to serve as either garden borders or grave markers. The brick was part of a public health campaign by Dr. Samuel Crumbine a member of the Kansas State Board of Health in the early 20th century.

However on page 72 (plate 89) is a base to another cupboard that is stylistically similar.
